    2020 Elections to Board of Directors

    Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Prairies and BC all had elections in November 2020 for the term January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. In all four regions, the incumbents were renominated and, due to no other nominations, all were reelected by acclamation:
    Ontario: Nick Jones
    Atlantic Canada: Chris Jette
    BC: Tyler Gillies
    Prairies: Jon Lovering.

    Competition: NTSS Awards for 2020

    The HPAC/ACVL Competition Committee, chaired by Eric Olivier, has determined that due to COVID-19 in 2020 resulting in the cancellation of most competitions, the 2019 Rankings in Hang Gliding, Paragliding, Hang Gliding Sports Class and Paragliding Accuracy would be frozen for 2020. The 2019 rankings can be found at

    Instructors/Tandem pilot certifications extended to May 31, 2021

    Due to the pandemic, there was a scarcity of instructor recertification and in-person First Aid courses available in 2020 throughout Canada. The HPAC/ACVL Board therefore extended all instructor/tandem pilot certifications to May 31, 2021.

    Hang Glider/Paraglider Interactions with Terrestrial Wildlife

    Brett Yeates, long time paraglider pilot in Cranbrook, BC, is conducting an informal survey worldwide about pilots’ encounters with terrestrial wildlife and any formal studies on this topic that may be out there, in particular ungulates. He has posted his question on the Paragliding Forum (General Section) at and the HPAC FB page at Please share any of your experiences as HPAC/ACVL hopes to develop a document on this topic.
