The 2015 XCanada cross-country competition ended on November 1st 2015 after a
record year for flights submitted.

There were some superb flights flown this year, but many of the longest flights passed
through class B airspace thus invalidating them for the official final podium spots and
prizes. In addition, to fly in class E airspace, pilots need to have taken the HAGAR
exam. I cannot verify whether you called your FIC before flying XC, nor did I check for MF
violations as I assume you would be carrying and using an airband radio when
required. Also, to receive a prize you need to be a current member of HPAC. Contests
need to be fair to be fun, and in this case the rules are reasonably clear, but there is
room to argue about stuff --- please do so if you feel your flights were pulled in error!
The results are below, but I’ll give everyone a week to get in any protests about the
airspace adjustments before they become final. Also, prizes for XCanada are for pilots
living in Canada only.

Most airspace violations in the final flight list this year were from Golden BC and were
due to flying above 12500’ above the transition area or control area extension around
Cranbrook while some were removed for flying into an airway at 13400’. For podium
place determination, the following flights were skipped and the next highest scoring
valid flight used to replace it:

Igor Tolsky, 259 km into class B airspace, class E airspace with no HAGAR
Stefan Miller, 261 km into class B airspace, class E airspace with no HAGAR
Vladimir Tsarkov, 213 km into class B airspace, not current HPAC member / no HAGAR
Ross Hunter, 171km, 165 km into class B airspace
Dale Regehr, all flights into class E airspace with no HAGAR
Tim Middlemiss, 194 km into class B airspace

(and also Cody Mittanck’s flight to the US border from Golden, class B airspace

This changed those on the podium in the PG Open and HG Open class. You can
check your own flights at

For review: Above Control Area Extensions and Transition Areas it becomes
class B at 12500’. Below an airway / RNAV route the air is class B above the
higher of 12500’ or the minimum enroute altitude (in Golden this creates
some limits at 12500’ and some at 13400’, 14000’, and 17000’). The MEA can
be found on en route charts, or at skyvector.com which also contains the
general airspace and VFR charts. All airspace above 18000’ is class B. The
default we use in the HG/PG community is GPS altitude, if you wish to use
barometric altitude you must follow the regulations for altitude setting and
report the relevant parameters on your flight submissions.

corrections: Original note had Gary Penninga, 156 km into class B airspace but using historical baro altitude this flight is perfectly legal.
