Yes, there has been a lapse, our apologies.
The web team will have the current issues up-loaded soon. |

Don't we pay someone to do the web updating?

No Quinn, we did decide to do this years ago as evidenced by the issues you do see on-line. Something happened in '04 that caused the "Air" editor to stop sending .the .pdf files to the web team to post...It was not a BoD decision to stop offering them on-line. |

Starting from Rob's suggestion,
the HPAC BOD has decided to have AIR available electronically to every member who prefers a paperless version.
Those members will either receive it by email or it will be made available with password protection from the website.
After a short lagtime, the issue will then be made available to all.
The details remain to be worked out, but your Bod has decided to go pro choice on this.

Why do you think password protection is necessary? |

James thought that it might be a good idea to have a short lag time to make sure that members and subscribers get a chance to to get the issue before it was made available to all. Then the PDF could be moved out of password protection and posted like the other previous issues.
But if James, Troy and you guys on the web team don't see a need for it, maybe we could forego this step.
Talk it over with them.

We could just upload it AFTER that lag time. |

That's great that AIR can now be available on line.
In my opinion, there is absolutely no reason to have a lag time or password protection for the on-line version. We should try to do whatever necessary to have members utilizing the electronic version of AIR. The more people opt for the electronic version the more money HPAC will save and the healthier it is for our environment.
In fact, I believe the majority would favour an electronic version in which case those who still choose to receive a hard copy of AIR are in effect being subsidized by those who opt out.

I agree, no reason not to have the online version freely and immediately available to everyone.
However, the cost of producing the mag (including but not only the printing) is partially covered by the advertising, paid for by the advertizers. If there's a chance that making the electronic version (containing the same ads) would reduce the popularity of the paper version, we might have to consider whether the advertizers are happy with the ad space in the files. Personally I don't see any reason they would have a problem with it. Total exposure would only increase. There would be copies all around the planet.

Actually, no. I guess no one's explained how the printing contract works, or something. Print runs are done in blocks of certain quantities. If we have 1% fewer printed, we don't save 1% of the cost. If we can get the quantity down into the next lower range we'd save some, but I don't know if there IS a lower one. The mailing costs are something like that too.
There's a minimum cost involved with producing the magazine layup (used to make either format) at all. There's a minimum cost involved to produce any amount of printed versions, at all. If we decide to discontinue the paper version completely there would be a savings, but we certainly can't do that yet. Portable readers are still tiny and poor quality and not many people have them, and electronically-rewriteable paper has just barely been invented.
Besides, if you discover, too late of course, that the roll in the outhouse is empty, wiping your butt with your Blackberry isn't a great option. Those buttons are killers! |

In my case Air is a second magazine and is optional.
With no lag time and no pasword protection, I see no reason to renew my optional subscription.
We will ask our editor how many Air subscriptions are optional. And he can then work it out with our BM and web team.
Although, I am in favour of openess, it might be more appropriate to move the decision making process to a more private venue.

Unless you want it on paper too.
You're not an HPAC member just so that you can get the magazine, after all. |

With the voted PRD we've sent to James, Troy and the web team the situation is really clear.
You guys are mandated to make it available on the web site.
Every member will have the choice. Isn't that great?
You guys have just to decide on the lag time issue and the consultation method (to find out which version the member wants).

Also, Quinn now has the past 14 issues in PDF form to put on the web,
so hopefully some of those will be up soon so people can get a sense
of how that will work. They look exactly like the printed version of
AIR, complete with advertising, with all but the four outside pages in
black and white.
Having full-colour PDFs would require that all of the photos are
processed twice and would add a big chunk of time to my workload, so
if we're having a mixed distribution of printed copies and PDFs, the
PDFs would remain in grayscale.
