Waypoint Planner: an easy way to make waypoints for comps by Tom Payne Moderator of the Paragliding Forum.

Wow Stuff!
How to use it:

Hi All,

In a similar style to XC Planner, here is:

Waypoint Planner http://waypointplanner.appspot.com/

It's an application that's designed to make it really easy to create and manage high-quality waypoint sets for competition/XC. I'm posting it here in Comp Rules and Advice because I think it will mainly be of interest to competition organisers.

You need a modern web browser: Firefox, Chrome or Safari, NOT Internet Explorer.

Quick instructions:
- Control box is in the top right corner.
- Type the name of a town into the Go To box and press enter
- Click "Create" to create a new waypoint
- While it is green you can drag it around, of course you can zoom in to place it precisely
- Click on it to view and edit details
- Elevation is automatically retrieved from Google whenever you move the waypoint
- Click on "Lock" to lock the waypoint in place (it turns yellow)
- Double-click on a waypoint to zoom to it
- Double-click on the map to zoom out and see all waypoints
- Click on "Download" to download all the waypoints in Geo (GPSDump) format

You can edit existing waypoint sets:
- I've attached an example waypoint file
- Drag and drop an existing waypoint file (Geo, CompeGPS format) onto the "Upload a file" box in the top right corner
- You need to click on a waypoint and "unlock" it to be able to edit it
- When you have finished adding, removing and deleting waypoints click on "Download"

Other features:
- You can put a radius around each turnpoint
- You can also type waypoint names into the Go To box to go directly to a waypoint
- The description can be retrieved from Google when you click on the refresh button by the input box - this sets the description to be the postal address of the location - it saves you having to look up or type in village names!
- You can cycle through all the waypoints using the left and right arrow buttons: great for checking all the waypoints in a set!
- You can download the waypoint coordinates in a text format ready to print out and give to your pilots
- To make a turnpoint map, all you need to do is take a screenshot!

On my TODO list I have:
- Make it prettier
- Preserve turnpoint radii
- Give some options for choosing colours

It is of course is 100% free as in both beer and speech. Source code is at http://github.com/twpayne/waypointplanner.

Many thanks to Martin Scheel, Jörg Ewald and Richard Bungay for beta testing.

Hope you like it, please tell me if you find any bugs or have ideas for additional features,

OK, I've put a new version of Waypoint Planner online at:
(thanks to Manolis for the hosting)

This is a temporary location - eventually Waypoint Planner will be hosted on the main www.paraglidingforum.com servers.

Please test it and tell me if you spot any problems. I've made a lot of behind-the-scenes modications. Although it should work, please always keep a backup copy of your waypoints. In particular, please check that when you download the waypoints that they are in the correct format with no errors.

If there are no problems reported within a week or so then I'll move it to a more permanent location.

Thanks again to Manolis and the PGforum Admins for the excellent support. As always, it's open source and you can find the source code online at http://github.com/twpayne/pgtools

Regards, Tom

Hi All, Here is a beta version of XC Planner version 2:

You're not going to read the instructions, but here they are anyway:

What's new:
- it should work on your mobile phone (iPhone/Android)
- you draw your flight, and XC Planner calculates the maximum score
- support for all XC leagues, and auto-detects your country's league
- speed and duration calculations
- airspace (thanks to Worldwide Soaring Turnpoint Exchange)
- thermals (thanks to ParaglidingNet, Switzerland only, but more countries coming)
- waypoint downloads include precise altitudes
- more download formats
- transfer your flight to your mobile phone by clicking on "Share" and then scanning the QR code
- much more...

Quick instructions:
- drag the red stars around to create your route
- drag the arrows (halfway between the stars) around to add extra points
- double-click (or double-tap) on red stars to remove them
- right-click adds a red star
- click, or use your mouse wheel to change the airspace, speed, duration, or thermal layer
- clicking (or tapping) on the yellow distance box expands or collapses the control panel
- you can set the XC league and the units by clicking on Preferences

Note that this will probably not be XC Planner version 2's final location, so don't bookmark it.

I'm sure there'll be a few bugs... please report them here. http://twpayne.blogspot.com/ Enjoy! Tom
