A Pro is that we can easily get a copy of Leonardo hosted just for Canada....and it does seem that is what some other countries are doing - see the links on the left at http://wxc.fai.org/
But do we need the trouble of having our own install of Leonardo to manage? It seems that is we use the one installed at paraglidingforum.com, we can still filter by Canada to see our results. |

FWD of a good email on the topic:
| Alex Raymont wrote: | I emailed Manolis at Leonardo a month or so back asking if we could have the BCXC league on Leonardo like a lot of other clubs do.
He said yes it would even be free but the custom filters for glider type, experience level etc he couldn't do. |
| Alex Raymont wrote: | I believe xcontest might be willing to change the filters and multipliers and I think there would be a small fee with them.
But because we have hg, pg, rigid wing, and experience level filters etc not really sure they would let us run the BCXC League the way we have been running it. |
| Alex Raymont wrote: | Seems easiest to keep running it as we have but require that you host your track logs on Leonardo or xcontest in the public domain for all to see and learn from.
Most of us already do that. Its how we get the distance numbers to input to the BCXC league.
As far as having a logbook on the new website. I agree with Mark its hard to beat XContest or leonardo. And I'd say not even worth trying.
Go look at Leonardo, most of our sites are on there and have records tracks etc. We just need to more Canadian pilots to download.
We could have Leo or xcontest do a Canadian XC league if we want to encourage people sharing there xc adventures.
National XC leagues are huge in most of the alpine countries and winning one is a big deal.
But its NOT (Mark is right again) the same as the race to goal National championships.
I have done an xcontest run XCamp in Italy and it was great. Once again not a race to goal type contest but for me I loved it.
Basically way easier and cheaper to run. No task calling or scoring, whomever gets the biggest score on xcontest that day from the agreed upon site wins.
Easy and fun, you fly where you want and bite off what you want.
I hope Fred/Randy runs one this year. You could do it for free. |
