TOW SYSTEM SURVEY
Your HPAC #: 1993
Do you use a tow system?
Yes or did for many years until recently
What types of aircraft does it tow (HG, PG, other...)?
HG & PG
What is the name of the school you run, if any?
Worked at High Perspective until opened High Perspective Shelburne which I owned and operated with Joe Cappello
Who owns the tow system (provide the name of the person, club, or school that owns it)?
Michael Robertson owned High Perspective Pickering. We purchased a winch from him which we sold back when we closed.
In what province is the tow system located?
Ontario
What year was the tow system built?
It was quite a few years ago from Phillipe Treabeau? I'm guessing late 80's early 90's
I also built a similar style but non hydraulic winch in 2004
What type of tow system is it (platform-launch payout, foot-launch payout, stationary, static line, aerotow, boat, etc.) ?
Stationary ground Winch.
What type & strength of rope does it use, and how much?
Spectra. It's about 3-5mm thick. Breaking strength varies at age of rope and what gets dragged accross ground. I think I heard it has a 2000lb breaking strength but after time & wear it can break on a solo tow.
What strength of weak link do you use (relative to the weight being towed)?
Generally about 200lb breaking strength on weak link. I'm guessing about 300lb on tandem. About equal to 1 G.
What are the average and highest tows from it?
Avergae tow height 1,000-1,500. Highest female 3,600ft, Highest male 4,500ft.
What types of aircraft does it tow (HG, PG, other...)? HG + PG
What is the name of the school you run, if any? Cold Lake club
Who owns the tow system (provide the name of the person, club, or school that owns it)? Donated to the club by original owners (myself + two pilots now gone)
In what province is the tow system located? Alberta
What year was the tow system built? 1994
What type of tow system is it (platform-launch payout, foot-launch payout, stationary, static line, aerotow, boat, etc.) ? Platform Payout, though all pilots now foot-launch, using a dual-release for HG ops.
What type & strength of rope does it use, and how much? 1/4 inch poly rope, 3000 ft
What strength of weak link do you use (relative to the weight being towed)? 2G
What are the average and highest tows from it? 1000 ft, 1700 ft
This is an old post. Not sure of the purpose or if you still care. Ross Hunter, Rob Green, Leif Hanson, John Jenson, Mike Scholte, Scott Gravel, Doug Litzenburger, the rocky mountain hang gliding leage, Jason Dyer, Eric, Northern lights, Ted Debeautrap, and I'm sure missing a couple others. All spectra line, all 300lb week links. Mostly tow hang gliders as not many paragliders know how to tow but we do tow some. Tow's average 2000'. You don't really need to tow any higher than that any way. All platform pay out whinch. All in Alberta.
