Willi Muller XC Challenge Sunday update, from Randy Parkin:

Day started windy from the NW then stayed that way, and with a high lapse rate the most common word heard in the LZ to describe conditions was “ratty”. As you can see from the tracks, some had great flights. Others bailed early to ease their minds, but found themselves in a turbulent LZ. No incidents though. More were stuck on launch watching the gusts, or hung out at the bottom struggling with the “should we go” conversation.

Many enjoyed following the tracks of the few going downrange on their phone or tablet while sitting in the LZ.

The daily results can be found at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuRz_3Um_n18dFNJeDNKdTZURExaVXhDZXhzYnc5ekE#gid=0

And the page with all the SPOT URLs is here, so you can watch the almost-live tracking from work etc:

Tuesday update from Randy:

OK kids, days like today are why we fly Golden. Great to see some of you getting out there and doing some distance. Congrats especially to Al Thielmann who did 171km as far as we can tell by translating his Spot OK message into distance. We know of at least 3 people in Canal Flats (146 km): Pete Reagan, Raul Sanchez and Chad Chudyk. More were distributed along the range with many doing personal bests. Even amongst those in the LZ there were many smiles as pilots pushed their flying boundaries just a little farther. Congrats to all for flying well and safely.

The value of Spot use was very evident today. Beyond the fun many of us (and many who are not here) had following the progress of the big flights, it was great to be able to check everyone off as in and safe. Also helped to get the retrieve on the road to shorten the day for those who got big distance.

Landing Forms for today will take a little time to come in - some people are still getting back. Take a look at the scores for the forms we have at...

See you in the morning. If you had a long flight or personal best today, be prepared for some recognition and perhaps a few questions - give everyone a chance to learn from your success. Breakfast 9:00 - 10:00 in the Pavilion - $5. Bring plate, knife and fork if you can. Meeting at 10:00.

Tomorrow looks good! Get some sleep.

The Willi Team

The 2013 Will Muller XC Challenge is now over and it was one of the most successful Willis in years! Over 50 pilots registered and flew last week when the weather co-operated. Several days of potential thunderstorms kept pilots local, but there were also several days that allowed the pilots to do HUGE flights and many personal bests. Many happy pilots at places like Invermere, Canal Flats, and further south, as well as numerous out-and-return flights to take strategic advantage of the scoring bonuses! For those watching from the office, the SPOT's provided quite a bit of entertainment as you were able to follow pilots' progress in near real-time.

To summarize the final results over the week:

HG:
1st place Ross Hunter - $250 + plaque
2nd place Serge Lamarche - $150 + plaque
3rd place Dave Haas - $75 + plaque

Womens HG:
1st place Beverly Johns

PG1 (>75km previous XC experience):
1st place Al Thielmann - $400 + plaque
2nd place Andrew Berkley - $200 + plaque
3rd place Max Lautenbacher - $100 + plaque

PG2 (<75km previous XC experience):
1st place Darcy Gillis - $400 + plaque
2nd place Mark Parminter - $200 + plaque
3rd place Tomohiko Murase - $100 + plaque

Womens PG:
1st place Lisa Dickinson
2nd place Carrie Corbin
3rd place Magali Lalonde-Legault

Complete results are at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuRz_3Um_n18dFNJeDNKdTZURExaVXhDZXhzYnc5ekE#gid=0

~$2000 in prize money plus sponsor swag was given out at the awards ceremony on Sunday...I hope to have photos soon!

Congratulations especially to the Willi Team: Stewart Midwinter, Leif Hanson, Randy Parkin, John McIsaac, Carrie Corbin, Janet Morris, Dale Osmond, Danny Wolf, Keith McCullough, and Vincene Muller (and anyone else I've missed). You guys made this happen!
